This was the first painting I ever did in pastels, and I've shown it's progress from start to finish in my demonstration under the miscellaneous section of this website.
The lioncub in particular was from the Ruckomechi area of Zimbabwe, where I had the most wonderful safari at Ruckomechi camp on the banks of the Zambezi river. It was late afternoon, I was in an open top jeep, returning to camp when I caught the entire pride slowly waking up under some acacia trees. I parked up next to them and was delighted when this inquisitive little one hopped on a log and sat so close to me that I could have stretched out my arm and touched him! He posed very peacefully for me, until his mother walked up to him whereby he became very brave and started growling at me. I made another painting of this called 'Spokesman for the pride'
