Who could fail to love Yosemite? A place of superlatives. I have spent many a happy day there and
hope to spend many more.
This large oil painting is all about change. In the distance the warm sun has reached the huge
granite cliffs of El Capitan melting the winter snowfall. In the foreground where the light of the sun
reaches the ground only late in the day, the snows of winter still have a hold on the landscape.
The painting is about the transition from winter to spring or in a wider sense from one state to
another, the fact that nothing is ever permanent. The Bald Eagle which symbolizes America,
represents the changes taking place in the country as a whole.
I was considering these things as I painted this scene, and it is poignant that I completed the
painting on my birthday, the 20th January. The very day President Barack Obama took his oath of
office and promised that change had come to America.
